Motorcycle, Scooter/Moped, Segway, and Bicycle use by Employees - Personal Protective Equipment Policy

Use of helmets is proven to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.  In fact, helmet use by bicyclists has been established to reduce head injury by 85% (Thompson, R.S., Rivara, F.P., &  Thompson, D.C. (1989). New England Journal of Medicine, 320, 1361-67).  As such, UF has issued this policy regarding the use of protective equipment when operating motorcycles, scooters/mopeds, Segways and bicycles.

In addition to wearing the appropriate headgear, operators and cyclists should:

  • Use both hands for handle bar control except when signaling or other appropriate operator action.
  • Carry items in the vehicle basket or in a backpack or other conveyance that does not hinder vehicle operation
  • Never operate vehicles inside buildings except to walk a Segway to its charging station or bicycle to a private office and with permission from your departmental authority.
  • Never bring gas-powered vehicles into buildings.
  • Not operate vehicles while wearing any devices other than helmets that may impair hearing.
