The University of Florida's Hearing Conservation Program follows regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and guidelines established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The Program includes a medical monitoring program for employees covered in the policy as well as training and the use of hearing protectors.
Each participant must have a baseline audiogram on file and participate in annual audiometric testing as defined in the Audiology Testing Procedures. Testing for employees in the Gainesville area is done at the Speech and Hearing Clinic in Dauer Hall. They can be reached at (352) 392-2041 for an appointment. Testing for employees outside the Gainesville area may be done by a local certified clinical audiologist.
Supervisors may want to refer to a noise level chart to help determine whether an employee should participate in the Hearing Conservation Program. The Noise Levels for Common Equipment includes several sources of noise along with specific sound levels and times allowed.
Please contact Environmental Health and Safety at (352) 392-1591 for further information on this program.
