The Diving Science and Safety Program (DSSP) serves two functions:
1. Research Project Operations Plan review for risk minimization
2. Diver/project assistance & training
The first function is the major role and justification for the DSSP. It is to insure that, by review and monitoring, dive practices and activities fall within AAUS/OSHA/DOT and agency guidelines, and the research activities are undertaken and performed in a manner which will minimize risk to participants thus preventing or minimizing possible accidents. To this end, diver qualifications and project proposals are reviewed and supplemental training or equipment provided when feasible. The DSO reviews project proposals wherein the activities are in the routine pattern of most studies. When the project is more demanding, the proposal is forwarded to the Dive Safety Board for a broader review and evaluation. The DSO is also available to assist in dive planning as needed.
The second role of the DSO is to provide supplemental training, assist with dive tasks, and assist with equipment service or supply. In this context the program can:
A. provide supplemental equipment for short term use - current inventory is:
19 Cylinders,
12 BCDs,
12 Regulators
2 Dan First Aid kits
3 Dan Oxygen regulators
7 Wet Suits
2 Dry Suits
B. equipment maintenance and cleaning, cylinder Visual Inspection,
C. training in dive related skills - see "Diver Training"
