Guidance on the Use of Human Cell Lines

Tissue Culture

Because human cells are capable of haboring a number of etiological agents, universal precautions and BSL-2 handling practices should be observed when using them. However, not all human cell lines require participation in the bloodborne pathogen program.

Use of the following human cells requires participation in the bloodborne pathogen program:

  1. All primary human cell lines.
  2. Any established or continuous human cell lines known to harbor bloodborne pathogens such as HIV and HBV.
